Frédéric Thiriez is a former pupil of the Ecole Nationale d'Administration (prestigious French school of administration), graduated first in his year at the Institut d'Etudes Politiques in Paris and qualified in law. He is also a Conseil d'Etat and Cour de Cassation advocate. He has been a partner of Lyon-Caen, Fabiani, Thiriez since 1990 and also currently teaches at the Institut d'Etudes Politiques in Paris.
In 1977, after completing the Ecole Nationale d'Administration, he chose to be a junior official (auditeur) at the Conseil d'Etat (disputes department, then home affairs department). In l981, he joined Gaston Deferre's cabinet, as a technical advisor, when Mr Deferre was Minister of State and Secretary for home affairs and decentralisation. He then became director of the cabinet of the Secretary of State in charge of public security.
In 1983, he returned to the Conseil d'Etat as Maître des Requêtes (senior official) and Commissaire du Gouvernement (government commissioner) with the general assembly of the disputes sections (l'assemblée du contentieux). In 1984, he took over directorship of the cabinet of the Secretary of State in charge of planning.
From 1988 to 1990, he was the director of political, administrative and financial overseas affairs at the Ministry of French Overseas Territories.
Frédéric Thiriez is a great football fan and a former member of the federal council of the Fédération Française de Football. He is currently a member of the board (and has been since 1995) and joint general secretary of the Ligue Nationale de Football and President of the Commission Nationale Paritaire d'Appel and of the Commission de révision des règlements of the Ligue Nationale de Football.
Frédéric Thiriez is Chevalier of the Ordre National du Mérite. He is the writer of an essay (Quatre ans après, Stock, 1985) and numerous legal articles.
